Gender / Violence 1997
Gender / Violence, is a series of 12 life size, female images silk screen printed on free standing aluminum panels. Each 5 and 1/2 foot panel has a female image overprinted by an abstracted target and a featured word selected from a vertical list of twelve words: harass, bondage, objectify, murder, stalk, battery, rape, defile, molest, abuse, hate and torture. As the viewer approaches a panel, a motion sensor triggers a short audio message stored on a computer chip. Each audio message asks a question of the viewer which in some way relates to the featured word on the target. The questions are directed toward prompting the viewer to examine his or her own assumptions about women?their view of the world in terms of gender.
